Goldsmith,
MacGregor-Goldsmith
& MacGregor Caps
Founded by Philip Goldsmith in Cincinnati in 1875, P. Goldsmith & Co. invented a machine that automated the process of winding string around a baseball. By 1937, and possibly earlier, the sporting goods company was making caps for the hometown Reds, and later did the same the Pittsburgh Pirates, the New York Giants, the Chicago Cubs and a few others. In 1937, Goldsmith bought the struggling company Crawford, McGregor & Canby Co. for its lines of golf and tennis gear, and perhaps its name — and merged the two names to become MacGregor-Goldsmith in 1946. Six years later, Goldsmith was dropped from the name, and MacGregor soon ceased making pro caps. Examples of the first two are displayed here.
